Sramana Mitra

Earlier today I was going through Forbes and saw the Midas 2012 list of Top 100 Tech Investors out of Silicon Valley, and I began to ask when our tech and startup ecosystem will have such seed funding and VCs. When will tech startups begin to flourish in Nigeria and in deed Africa? I am fully aware that it didn’t just start happening like that in Silicon Valley. I deduced that:

-Entrepreneurs not government have passionately built and grown that ecosystem to such an enviable height where all can admire, talk and write about them and that is what startup founders and engineers over there are benefiting from.

-Perhaps over 90 percent of startups over there are not even funded.

-In Silicon Valley they most times fund businesses not ideas.

-Silicon Valley has grown over the years to what it is today as the Tech capital of the world, they no doubt have several business networks and interests within the valley and that it becomes extremely difficult for someone outside the network to get funding.

– And most importantly, what has worked over there may not exactly work here but there are several lessons, ideas and strategies we can get from Silicon Valley that will help grow startups in Africa and  entrepreneurship education  which is key having a successful business. One of such opportunities is being led by the hand by someone who has being in Silicon Valley for several years doing business and growing startups.
